Movember 2022 is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during November to raise awareness of men’s health issues. This includes prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide. The foundation raises funds for research and support programs that enable men to live healthier and longer lives. Additionally, on average, men die five years earlier than women, with around 10.8 million globally facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Experts unite around this awareness month to change the way men in need are treated and supported.
Men are less likely to ask for help when it comes to their mental health. One of the dominant factors is the concept of masculinity, which makes it difficult for men to express their emotions and admit there is a problem. The conflict between masculinity and seeking help is highlighted due to society’s stigma, influencing the message that “men are self-reliant and tough”. (Cole & Ingram, 2011).
Globally, testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. Movember 2022 aims to open conversation around men’s health through a fun approach to fundraising. In addition to activities held all year round. Millions have joined the movement, raising $911 million and funding over 1,250 projects focused on various men’s health issues.
