Burnout Report: A Wake‑Up Call for Workplace Wellbeing

The Burnout Report from Mental Health UK sheds powerful light on the state of workplace stress across the UK, and the findings are a wake-up call for organisations everywhere.

Workplace burnout is a mainstream risk that affects almost everyone. According to the report, 9 in 10 people experienced high or extreme pressure or stress over the last year, and while overall absence due to poor mental health has remained roughly stable at around 21%, deeper patterns are emerging that demand attention.

A Generational Divide in Stress and Absence

One of the most striking findings from the report is the growing generational divide in stress experiences and work absence:

  • Young workers (18–24) are most likely to take time off due to poor mental health caused by stress, driven by factors such as unpaid overtime, increased cost‑of‑living pressures, and workplace isolation,
  • This group also reports a significant drop in trust, with fewer young workers comfortable opening up to their line managers about stress compared with the previous year,
  • Younger generations are also struggling more with switching off from work, only a third feel they can disconnect when needed, compared with nearly half of workers aged 55 and over,

These patterns show that stress is not distributed equally across the workforce, and that organisations need nuanced, tailored support systems rather than one-size-fits-all wellbeing approaches.

Why This Matters for Employers

The implications are profound:

  • Talent retention risks, younger workers feeling unsupported may disengage or leave, costing organisations time, money, and innovation,
  • Trust and psychological safety, a decrease in comfort around discussing stress with managers signals a breakdown in workplace psychological safety, an essential foundation for wellbeing and performance,
  • Hidden productivity loss, many employees continue to work while stressed, a phenomenon known as presenteeism, meaning organisations may be paying for reduced productivity without realising it,

Stress isn’t just a mental health issue, it’s a business issue. Companies with better wellbeing cultures perform better, retain more talent, and innovate faster,

What Works: Actionable Support, Not Buzzwords

The Burnout Report identifies several interventions that matter to employees:

  • Reasonable adjustments at work,
  • Accessible mental health training,
  • Supportive leadership and line management,
  • Professional mental health support,

Younger workers are especially likely to say these interventions help protect against stress and burnout, yet not all organisations provide them effectively,

At Wellity Global, we see that workplace wellbeing isn’t a perk, it’s a strategic priority. Real impact happens when organisations move beyond superficial wellness campaigns to embed mental health support into the day-to-day culture, systems, and leadership practices.

A Call to Action

Workplaces must evolve to meet the needs of a multi-generational workforce. The Burnout Report reveals that stress, trust, and engagement are interconnected, and without meaningful change, employers risk losing talent, productivity, and organisational resilience,

Now is the time for employers to:

  • Rebuild trust through psychological safety and open dialogue,
  • Train managers to recognise and respond to stress,
  • Design flexible, tailored wellbeing pathways that reflect diverse employee needs,
  • Measure wellbeing outcomes, not just outputs,

If you’d like help turning these insights into action at your organisation, the team at Wellity Global is here to partner with you.
